About the Photographer

My name is Paul D. Baker and I am a Creative Artist living in the Rochester NY Area. My background is in all things art-related, which helps fuel my passion for photography. My interest in capturing images started in college when I took a B&W Photography class. I purchased my first SLR camera for that class, a Minolta x370 with a wicked 50mm lens (which I still own to this day). I shot many rolls of film with that camera and learned to process negatives and create prints in a physical darkroom. Later, I took an advanced photography class where I lugged around a HUGE bellows type large-format camera (think Ansel Adams) and shot on 4×5 film. Learning to use that beast of a camera gave me great appreciation for landscape photography. Fundamentals like composition, lighting, and subject matter were instilled in me during my college years. To this day, I still apply those same techniques I learned some years ago.

During my career as a Graphic Designer I have had the opportunity to further develop (pun intended) my photography skills. I worked closely with the Wegmans corporate photographer during my employment with the supermarket chain in their Employee Communications division. I shot countless product and equipment photos for Xerox to use in their copier, printer and fax machine manuals. Even now as a Web Designer I find myself taking employee head-shots, product photos for use as stock images, as well as images for use in on-line gift shops. And of course on the side, I take senior yearbook portraits, family pictures, and lifestyle images.

My work has been displayed on numerous websites, in local galleries, and in print (not to mention some images that hang on the walls in friends and family houses). Three of my images have been published in local books about Rochester, NY. A few of my photos have also appeared in local newspapers and magazines. I am an active member in several local photography clubs and continue to take classes at a local community arts center. I have access to a studio that I can rent by the hour where I conduct much of my indoor portrait work. I regularly shoot local events that include dance, sports, and festivals.
